Though hundreds of condemnations have been made before, this fatwa is by far the boldest step yet: this fatwa is not merely an affirmation of Islam’s orthodox position concerning peace, but it is a resolute theological position, based on Islam’s primary sources, on the necessity of eliminating terrorism. The Shaykh delineates his research explaining that suicidal terrorism is not just haram, (forbidden) by Islam, but is an express act of kufr (disbelief ). The Shaykh thereby excommunicates those who justify the indiscriminate killing of non-combatants be they Muslim or not. This fatwa goes further by omitting ‘ifs and buts’- as added by some contemporary thinkers on the subject, which usually creates leeway for terrorists to justify their criminal actions. The Shaykh, through this press conference, has championed the case for Islam in the West. He has done a great service for global peace and harmony, calling for the prevention of the so called ‘clash of civilisation’, by taking a bold step to give out a clear and unequivocal message that the terrorists do not represent Islam, nor do they speak in our name
