‘Peace for Humanity’ Conference 2011 ‘Muhammad the Merciful’

‘Peace for Humanity’ Conference was held in historic Wembley Arena under the banner of Minhaj-ul-Quran International UK on September 24, 2011. Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri presided over the Conference, which was also attended by human rights and peace activists, religious scholars, opinion leaders and key leaders and followers of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism.
The representatives of all religions made special prayers for the establishment of peace in the world according to the teachings of their religions. Later on, the faith leaders gave their hands in hands of Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri to make a collective peace prayer. The peace candles were also lit on the occasion. Thousands of people, attending the historic Conference, stood up from their seats and the venue resounded with chants of ‘Allah is Great’.

Over 11 thousand people from North America, South Africa, Europe to Asia including Sahibzada Pir Sayyid Abdul Qadir Jamal-ud-Din Al-Gillani, Pir Sayyid Abdul Qadir Shah Gillani, Sahibzada Pir Amin-ul-Hasnat Shah, Dr Usama al-Abd, vice chancellor of renowned Al-Azhar University of Egypt, Dr Abdul Dayyan An-Nasir, Shaykh Muhammad al-Nanowy (USA), Dr Joel Hayward (UK), Noor Muhammad Jarral Mesut Kurtis (Macedonia), Ms Naeema Jaleel, Sahibzada Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Qadri, Ms Ghazala Hassan Qadri, Ms Khadija Atkinson, Ms Swaba, Sahibzada Pir Fayyaz-ul-Hassan, Dr Raheeq Ahmad Abbasi and Qari Sayyid Sadaqat Ali. Shaykh-ul-Islam delivered his keynote speech on the occasion.

The proceedings of the Conference got underway with the recitation from the Holy Quran followed by recital of ‘Qaseeda Burda Shairf’ and Naat in different languages of the world. At the outset of the program, the leading participants and scholars held one another’s hands to show their solidarity for promotion of peace in the world.

Ms Khadija Atkinson read out a document with regard to establishment of global peace, which was named as ‘London Declaration’ meant to promote peace and foster resistance and opposition to extremism. The participants were told that about one million people from across different nationalities, cultures and regions would sign this document till December 2011 to demonstrate their support for peace. The document has been launched online as well as through broachers. Ms Atkinson said that MQI has done justice to its task of representing the Muslims at the international level. She said that Islam is a religion of peace, which espouses equality, social and economic justice in the world without any discrimination of any kind. Its followers have been ordained to take care of even animals and plants. She said that the Conference has given a clear message to the world that terrorism and extremism have nothing to do with Islam and it is unfortunate that actions of a select group of misguided individuals were being associated with Islam, which was unfair. She said that it was wrong to blame Islam in this regard. She demanded that the anti-Islam policies framed on these erroneous perceptions should be discarded. She reminded the international human rights organizations and the world powers of their moral duty to rid the Islamic countries out of oppression. She said that doing so would guarantee the establishment and durability of international peace.

Address of Shaykh-ul-Islam
Addressing ‘Peace for Humanity Conference on the subject of “Islam and establishment of global peace’, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, the founding leader of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, said that the world needed peace, security and brotherhood more than before. He said that after 9/11, the difficulties of the Muslims around the globe have increased manifold. The picture of Islam spread in the world has nothing to do with Islam and 99% of Muslims are peace-loving. He said that terrorism and extremism had affected the Muslims more than the world. He said that thousands of people were killed in terrorist incidents, affecting millions of families. Extremism, he said, divided people and produced pessimism and despondency. He congratulated MQI UK on holding such a grand and purposeful Conference.

Addressing the leaders of different religions, who were present in the meeting, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri invited them to join their forces and collectively launch a peace drive in the world. He said that the entire world had become global village and humanity had a shared stake in the establishment and maintenance of peace. He said that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) gave the lesson of brotherhood, tolerance, moderation and peace. All Prophets and religions propagated the message of peace and harmony in the world. He said that it was important to prove ourselves a true inheritor of this legacy and dedicate ourselves to establishment of peace in the world. He hoped that ‘Peace for Humanity’ Conference would become the basis for further strengthening interfaith ties between the Muslims and the non-Muslims.

Addressing the Muslim youth, Shaykh-ul-Islam asked them to unite for the establishment of peace, respect, dignity and welfare of humanity. He asked them to dissociate with the Islam of Osama Bin Laden and become the true followers of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). He urged them to reject the ideology of Al-Qaeda and submit themselves to the real teachings of Islam. He said that MQI had established think tanks and planned lectures, conferences, and seminars for training and guidance of the Muslim youth. These think-tanks are playing their due role in promotion of peace.

Shaykh-ul-Islam said that after the 9/11, the blood of thousands of innocent people has been shed and the millions of families have been ruined. He said that the human life and values have lost their meaning. “It is about time, this process of de-humanization was stopped forthwith. The way the migration to the holy city of Medina paved the way for the beginning of a new age, likewise, the Wembley Conference would lay the foundation-stone for reviving the lost glory of Islam founded by the Holy Prophet (SAW). The Muslim youth should launch a sustained struggle for spreading the Islamic message of love and peace and expose and foil the conspiracies hatched enemies of Islam,” he added.

Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that the Western media supports 99% peaceful voice of majority Muslims, while only one percent is bent on projecting radicalized, bigoted minority. This one percent part of media should change its policy as well. “Gone are the days when extremist and terrorist mindset held sway. It is about time democracy replaced dictatorship, which is essentially part of Islam. The people must have inviolable right to enjoy fundamental rights and a free life,” he maintained.

Shaykh-ul-Islam made it clear that the time to heal wounds and bridge gulf had long come and the conduct of Peace for Humanity Conference condemned all forms and manifestations of terrorism and extremism in clear terms. He said that the people of the world must join their forces to eliminate fear, hatred and bigotry from the world and carve out a new direction for humanity where people have access to the necessities of life, enjoy socio-economic justice, live in an amicable and harmonious environment and have equality of opportunities to flourish in their lives. He urged upon followers of all regions to get united on the minimum agenda of humanity by keeping individual identities intact. “This is how peace can be established in the world,” he added.

Shaykh-ul-Islam said that he wanted to see the world transformed into a hub of happiness and peace from which issued forth the fountains of love, freedom, compassion, generosity and morality. He hoped that the international peace conference would lay the basis for establishment of brotherhood between the Muslims and non-Muslims.
The thousands of participants expressed their support and approval of Shaykh-ul-Islam’s mission by extending him a standing ovation, chants and slogans punctuated in between his speech.
The proceedings of the Conference were broadcast live throughout the world via Minhaj.tv and ARY QTV. The gatherings were also arranged in different parts of the country where people watched the proceedings of the Conference live from London.

Open heart, mind, Soul Surgery by Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri at Al-Hidayah Camp 2005
Setting off from London Islamic Cultural Centre we were about to embark on our spiritual journey of Al Hidaya camp 2005, on our quest for thirst of knowledge. And in search of classical and authentic teachings of our beloved Rasul (saw).
On reaching the venue set in the beautiful surroundings of Shropshire hundreds of young Muslims from around the World (brothers & sisters) gathered eager to taste the blessed fruits of sacred knowledge and thirsty to drink from the fountain of Tarbiyya (teachings) from the great Mujadid (reviver of Islam) `Sheykh -ul- Islam.
Waiting for registration our queuing resembled a long line of `sick` patients waiting for an appointment with a top surgeon. Surly, we had come with our many diseases of the heart, mind and soul; worldly desires, huge ego`s, selfishness, arrogance, greed, lethargy, jealously, hatred, envy, impatiens, vengefulness etc, the list is endless.
We were here to receive the only cure for these diseases `open heart, mind, soul surgery`, to be preformed by the great Sheykh-ul- Islam, Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul- Qadri.
Our first blessed glance of the noor of light on the beautiful face of Sheykh-ul-Islam was during our first discourse. This was a very lengthy discourse on the spiritual inner unseen aspects of Islam known as `Tasawuf` (the science of self purification). Sheykh-ul- Islam had already made his first diagnosis and delivered the necessary spiritual intervention. Through the use of beautiful quotations from the word of Allah (swt) and blessed incites from the holy seerah of Rasul (saw) and rightly guided others (too many to mention). We were injected with words of pearls of wisdom. Sheykh-ul-Islam beautifully enlightened our hearts, minds and soul with words of Al Hidaya (guidance) giving us the tools to use towards understanding and reaching Al- Hidaya.
Our second discourse and necessary treatment focussed on defining our `Aqida` (science of belief). This was achieved through classical evidence`s from Qur`aan and Sunnah. Sheykh-ul- Islam blessed by his wisdom and depth of Quranic knowledge orated far back as the incident relating to the first human creation of Sayidina Adam(as) and the Ibliss. The Ibliss who was considered a highly knowledgeable Jinn who taught others, was thrown out of the nearness of Allah (swt). Not because of popular belief of not prostrating to Adam (as) but because of his lack of adab (respect) of Prophet Adam(as). This was orated as a completely new perspective on this incident. Sheykh -ul-Islam beautifully, smoothly and comprehensively concluded and connected this incident with the love (ishq) and extreme reverence (adab) of Rasul (saw) forming the true basis of belief (Iman). .
The ideology and philosophy of Minhaj-ul-Qur`aan was presented as our third discourse. It became apparent that the ideology and philosophy of Minhaj-ul-Qur`aan has developed using the classical and traditional teachings of our most beloved Rasul (saw). Minhaj-ul Qur`aan implements a holistic and comprehensible system, facilitating the needs of the modern day Muslim Ummah. This is carried out within the realms and boundaries of Islamic Jurisprudence.
The forth and final discourse was related to the above (third discourse) dealing with Da`wa (Communication of the correct interpretation of Islam). For those needing clarification in relation to Da`wa on both a macro and micro level especially in the current climate of the society. Then this discourse was for you. This discourse did not only comprise of a modern day analysis of the problems faced by a modern day Muslim but it offered its cures strategies. A step by step practical guide on self purification was given- purifying and eradicating different problems both zahir and batin (inside and outside) of a Muslim. Thus enabling a Muslim to be a perfect role model in society, which is the best form of Da`wa.
Our final course of treatment ended with a most heart felt spiritually awakening Du`a. How fortunate are we to have been in the company of such a wuli (beloved) of Allah(swt) beseeching help and forgiveness for us. Sheykh-ul Islam came to the Al-Hidaya to show us Al- Hidaya he made his diagnoses followed by a 3 day course of intervention. Sheykh-ul- Islam can only pray for our prognoses. If we do not follow the advice and guidance given to us by our Surgeon then our prognosis does not seem to be in our favour. We may not be around to receive the next course of intervention.
Like our beloved great Sheykh -ul- Islam said,” I can not give you the taste of fruits you have never tasted before, I can describe them to you, I can explain the taste, but you will have to taste them for yourself to see what they are really like”
My dear brothers and sisters lets pray for the long life and good health of our Beloved Sheykh-ul- Islam and may we all put into practice his beautifully articulated words of wisdom. Through his wasila may we be shown mercy and guidance and be accepted as Mureed of the Sultan Sayidina of all Sheykhs Abd ur Qadir al Jillani(ra) on the day of Qiyama. And give us Shif`a of Rasul(saw) allowing us by the Mercy and Forgiveness of Allah(swt) to head into Paradise as a true sincere workers of Minhaj-ul-Qur`an -Ameen.

Historic lecture on Imam Abu Hanifa Imam-ul-Aimma fil Hadith:by Shaykh-ul-IslamTahir-ul-Qadri

An Imam Azam Conference on, Imam Azam Imam-ul-Aimma fil Hadith, was held at the head quarters of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, Lahore, in which Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri gave an historic lecture stemming from several months of research in which he proved that Imam Azam Abu Hanifa is the Imam of Hadith of all imams of Hadith including Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Tirmizi, Imam Abu Dawood, Imam Nasai etc.
Guest Scholars and Mashaikh
Hundreds of renowned scholars and Mashaikh from the length and breadth of the country came to the conference in order to witness the historic display by Shaykh-ul-Islam of his latest research which has never been done before in the whole history of Islam.

Some of the most renowned Scholars who attended are Peer Ameen-ul-Hasnaat son of Pir Justice Karam Shah al-Azhari, Allama Muhibbullah Nuri son of Faqih-e-Azam Allama Nur-ullah Naeemi, Shaykh Ahmad Zubaidi from Syria, Iranian Consulate General Aqai Raza Amini, Pir Sayyad Bilal Hussain Shah of Ajmaihr Shareef, Pir Khawaja Mueen ud-Deen Kuraijah, Sayyed Azmat Ali Shah Hamdani, Allama Niyaz Hussain Najafi, Professor Dr Jameel-ur-Rahman Chisti, Agha Murtaza Poya, Allama Ali Gazanfer Kararwi, Professor Abd-ur-Rahman Bukhari.
Talks by Guest Scholars and Mashaikh
Brief talks were delivered by some of the main guests as they appreciated the great historic effort of Shaykh-ul-Islam on cutting the roots of all baseless accusations levelled against Imam Azam Abu Hanifa for centuries. They stated that existence of such accusations and the inability of comprehensively rebutting them for centuries held a sense of shame among the lovers of Imam Azam across the globe, especially the Hanafis. They said that Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri, by conducting his deep and unprecedented research to prove that Imam Azam is the Imam-ul-Aimma fil Hadith, shows that Shaykh-ul-Islam is not only a great scholar, Interpreter of the Quran, a revolutionary leader and a thinker but has proved with out any shadow of a doubt that he is one of the biggest Muhadiths. Being the Mujadid of the present century it was only fitting for him to raise the heads of all Hanfis with pride as now they could prove to critics on how Imam Abu Hanifa truly is Imam Azam in Hadith as well as Fiqh. They concluded by hoping that Shaykh-ul-Islam would continue to revive Islam through his great mission of Minhaj-ul-Quran International (MQI) with their full backing and support behind him.
Historic Lecture
Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri delivered a lecture lasting just under four hours which was heavily condensed due to shortage of time. Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri announced that the whole of his research on this topic will be included in his book which will be published soon consisting of two volumes. He said he will only cover some of the main points of his research in the lecture.

Shaykh-ul-Islam totally demolished the slur that Imam Abu Hanifa only had knowledge of 17 hadiths or a limited number of hadith by an avalanche of arguments proving that Imam Abu Hanifa is actually the Shaykh in Hadith of all the main Imams of Hadith.
Main points of the lecture are given below which prove that Imam Azam Abu Hanifa is the Imam-ul-Aimma fil Hadith:
The hadith of Bukhari and Muslim, “a man from the children of Faaris will acquire knowledge even if it is in the stars” actually refers to Imam Abu Hanifa and not Sulaiman Farsi or any other Imam.
- Imam Azam Abu Hanifa was a tabiee and had taken traditions from many sahabah. He was the only imam of Hadith who had taken all of his traditions from the “khair-ul-Qurun” from whom there is no possibility of fabricating traditions; this is why Imam Abu Hanifa received traditions which were not received by later Imams of Hadith Like Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim etc. as they had set strict conditions in accepting any tradition which severely limited the number of traditions which they accepted as Sahih.
- The whole of the Sihah Sittah consists of 10,000 traditions but the musnads of Imam Abu Hanifah have a minimum of 10,000 traditions according to various narrations.
- Imam Azam’s students were the Shaykhs of Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim and others as they had taken hadiths from them. This makes Imam Azam Abu Hanifa the grand shaykh of Imam Bukhari , Imam Muslim and others.
- Sahih Bukhari is renowned for its salasiyaat: traditions which only have 3 links between Imam Bukhari and The Prophet SAW which number seventeen. Imam Azam Abu Hanifah has narrated traditions which only have one link between him and the Prophet SAW. This was a great revelation by Shaykh-ul-Islam as this was not pointed out by anyone in the past. Shaykh-ul-Islam devised the term Uhadiyaat for such traditions. Imam Abu Hanifah is the only Imam of hadith to have these traditions. Then Shaykh-ul-Islam revealed that there are also a great number of traditions narrated b Imam Azam Abu Hanifa which only have two links between him and the Prophet SAW which he termed as thanaiyaat. Again no other Imam of hadith has these traditions. The number of sulasiyaat narrated by Imam Abu Hanifa are so many that they have not been counted.
- The salasiyaat of Bukhari, which are seen as the cream of Sahih Bukhari, 15 of the 17 were taken by Imam Bukhari from the students of Imam Azam Abu Hanifa.
- The fact that Imam Bukhari did not take traditions directly from Imam Azam was not because he doubted the great status of Imam Azam in hadith. It was because Imam Bukhari has mentioned in his books that he only took traditions from people who considered iman to consist of declaration by the tongue, acceptance by the heart and practice upon Islam. Imam Abu Hanifah did not agree with that definition of Iman and only believed Iman to consist of the declaration of the tongue and acceptance by the heart.
- Imam Muslim who was the student of Imam Bukhari did not take any tradition directly from Imam Bukhari in his Sahih Muslim; the same is the case with other Imams of Hadith who did not take traditions from their teachers. Imam Bukhari was a Shafai but did not take any traditions from Imam Shafai in his Sahih al-Bukhari. So not taking traditions from any Imam of hadith did not mean that the Imam who did not take them was in doubt of the hadithic ability of the Imam he was not taking the traditions from.
- Shaykh-ul-Islam gave quotations from great Imams who regarded Imam Abu Hanifah as Imam Azam and the greatest authority in Hadith and knowledge.
Note: Full details, facts and figures were given in the lecture which can be viewed on this site, this was only an overview of the speech.
The historic lecture left all participants in shock, in the amount of new information which they had received from Shaykh-ul-Islam which they had never imagined to their wildest imaginations had even existed.
Lunch was served to all the participants which was arranged by Shaykh-ul-Islam himself. Shaykh-ul-Islam had lunch with the main guests.

Reality Of Mysticism & Ways Of Gnosis
Episode 1
peaking on the subject of “Reality of Mysticism and Ways of Gnosis”, he said that mysticism and spiritual excellence is not about performance of rituals, nor is it confined to any particular methodology. Real mysticism, he said, creates such a real change in human beings, that may transform his manner of thinking, morals and man ends up becoming embodiment of excellence of morality and spiritual values. He further said that these manners and values are breeding ground for the growth of spiritualism and mysticism.
Episode 2
On August 23, 2011, the second day of Itikaf, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri spoke to thousands of ‘Mutakifeen’ attending the Itikaf being organized under the banner of Minhaj-ul-Quran International. Itikaf is an occasion to purify heart, purge it of evils and to bring about reform in personal life. The subject of Shaykh-ul-Islam’s address was ‘Spiritualism and Path to Gnosis’. He said that it is an agreed fact among the mystics and Sufis that journey towards gnosis is characterized by various stages, states of mind and ranks. The most unstable and fleeting among these variables is the state of mind. He said that when one continues to remember one’s Lord, one’s heart is swarmed by spiritual blessings and when one pleads one’s Lord beseechingly, one’s heart comes to be enlightened with spiritual light called ‘Noor’. The more man absorbs himself in worship and obedience to Allah Almighty, the more he is blessed with special guidance and enlightenment during the performance of even optional prayers.
Shaykh-ul-Islam said that as the coldness of water leaves its impact upon the personality of man, in the same manner, when he is pleased with Allah and His Prophet (SAW), he gets to taste the impacts of this pleasure, which leads him to develop a particular state of mind and heart. Thus when he prays and recites the word of God (Holy Quran), he experiences various states of spiritual ecstasy.
According to Sahih Muslim, Hazrat Hanzala (RA) submitted in the honour of the Holy Prophet (SAW): O Prophet of Allah (SAW), when we are present in your company, it appears as if paradise and hell are before us. When we return home, these states cease to exist. The Holy Prophet (SAW) said after hearing this that when this feeling comes and goes, it is sign of faith. One must not worry over it.
Shaykh-ul-Islam said that when a particular state seizes man, light pierces into his heart. There are some people on whom drop of spiritual light continues to pour and there are many on whom the spiritual light rains. There are some luckiest ones whose heart becomes the embodiment of the showers of divine disclosures. These are different states of mind, which continue to ebb and flow under the impact of a pious company without any involvement of struggle for spiritual enlightenment.
Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri referred to the Hadith wherein the Holy Prophet (SAW) said: If the state of mind you experience in my company stays with you even when you are home, you will feel as if you walk through streets and angels descend to your right and left and wait in queues to shake hands with you.
Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that such states of mind keep coming and going like a glow-worm; they do not stay longer; they are temporary and inconsistent. In terminology it called ‘kaifiat’. However, if such a state persists and the feeling of spiritual rapture lasts longer, hanging on and on, it becomes a compulsive hang-up and is called ‘haal’ and the person experiencing it is called ‘Sahib-e-Haal’. He said that when one remains engrossed in one’s relationship with Allah Almighty, one does not care a bit, even if people choose to scold him. Whatever sense of worth and feeling of elevation he were to get from the appreciation and praise of people, he happens to get it from His Lord millions of times better than from people around him. That is why, he remains indifferent to people. He further said that when this ‘haal’ or compulsive hang-up of spiritual ecstasy becomes stable and permanent, the man attains to the station of the one spiritually exalted, known as ‘Sahib-e-Muqam’.
Shaykh-ul-Islam further said that at times man’s state of mind continues to fluctuate. Satan is also happy to see that man keeps on working hard throughout his life, but does not get the taste from it or he is happy that man does not get the motivation to worship. Satan is happy with him who is oblivious of his religious duties.
Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that when man sheds indifference and starts remembering his Lord, Satan begins to get irritated and piqued. As man continues on the path of gnosis, the Satanic attacks also intensify. These attacks get defeated when such a person attains to spiritual station. However, he has to safeguard his ‘territory’ after getting the privileged station or ‘muqam’ in spiritualism. Then, man has to subject himself to meditation, spiritual struggle, self-accountability and dialogue. Shaykh-e-Akbar Mohi-ud-Din Ibne Arabi says that we even do not conduct appraisal of our actions performed during the day. The condition of our predecessors was that they would hold accountability of even their thoughts occurring to them and departing.
Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that man cannot become firm and strong on the path of spiritualism and gnosis unless he has very strong foundation. The stronger the foundations on the path of gnosis and spiritualism, the stronger the destinations he aspires to attain. Otherwise, there is a strong possibility that he would not be able to keep up momentum and would flounder on the way. If one is firmly grounded, one gets to know how to transition from fleeting feelings to a more durable and stable state of mind i.e. haal, and how to ward off attacks mounted by the lower self. If one recognizes one’s self, only then can one face off its offensive in various forms and manifestations.
Shaykh-ul-Islam said that lower or ill-commanding self mounts attacks on man in various forms such as dominance of cardinal desires, conceit, and anger. The question is how to identify them. Then there are attacks from the cursing self followed by fluctuations in the inspired self. These are various stages that lead up to the attainment of the satisfied self. What is most required in the process of this tiresome journey is knowledge. Those who think that they would be able to pull along on the path of spiritualism with ignorance are caught up in manifest misguidance and error. There is no concept of spiritualism without productive and profitable knowledge. Neither does a disease get diagnosed, nor cured without spiritual knowledge.
Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that those who have rendered spiritualism and mysticism into a business, they negate knowledge before their disciples. They say that knowledge is exclusive to scholars, while they are ‘Sahib-e-Haal’. This is the extreme ignorance and this disease is rampant both in India and Pakistan. He said that gnosis and spiritualism is a skill, and Sufis and Saints are the masters of this skill, which is not complete without knowledge.
Addressing people of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, Shaykh-ul-Islam said that one cannot attain to ‘Tareeqat’ (the spiritual path) without implementing ‘Shariat’ (Islamic law). He who claims otherwise is a fraud and a liar. He regretted that people of these countries have confined the scope of spiritualism to the performance of a few ignorant rituals.
Huzoor Ghous-ul-Azam, Bayazid Bustami, Junaid Baghdadi and Data Ganj Bakhsh Ali Hajveri (may Allah be well pleased with them) said that the claim of action not informed by ‘Shariat’ is false. He who does so is the follower of Satan. The Sufis and Saints did not accept any idea which talked of success merely due to affinity or association and without performing good deeds. This concept has been entertained by the ignorant and lovers of the worldly gains. Mysticism is all about excellence of actions, excellence of morality and spiritual loftiness of mind, shunning worldly pursuits that make one indifferent to God, whereas our society is poised at two extremes when it comes to understanding the reality of spiritualism. One set of people fully and tally reject it out of hand, while the other has rendered it into a profitable business enterprise.
Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that productive knowledge protects the holder of spiritual station and there is no concept of superiority without possession of productive knowledge in future. Therefore, one must endeavour to attend the company of the scholars and the friends of Allah in order to safeguard faith as well as continue the process of spiritual growth.
Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that due to the dominance of materialism, we do not do self-appraisal of what we did during day, while our forefathers even used to conduct accountability of their thoughts. They would get so much worried even by a small occurrence in thoughts that they would work hard day in and day out to reform the diseased thought through worship and meditation.
Episode 3
Shaykh-ul-Islam said that ‘Shaykh’ occupies the central place in the process of spiritual growth. Being a ‘Shaykh’ (spiritual mentor) is neither a business nor an inheritance. Rather anyone who fulfills the demands of ‘Ehsan’ (excellence), ‘Iman’ (faith) and ‘Islam’ (obedience) can attain to this status. He rises to this rank like an ordinary person who continues to acquire education and ends up becoming a specialist in his field, a scholar, a businessman or a scientist. Shaykh-ul-Islam said emphatically that whosoever would acquire the requisite attributes of a spiritual being, he would carve out a place for himself. Being a Sajjada Nasheen is not necessary to become a ‘Shaykh’, rather whosoever chooses the path of ‘Shariah and Tareeqat’ with sincerity of purpose may become ‘Shaykh’.
Shaykh-ul-Islam said that an odd concept about a disciple and discipleship has become prevalent in our midst. The meaning of disciple or ‘Mureed’ is to make a vow and in the terminology of spiritualism, a disciple or ‘Mureed’ is a person who vows to seek Allah and he whom Allah seeks becomes His beloved servant. According to the mystic ideology propounded by the Quran, one who purges himself of the worldly desires and evils and dedicates oneself to Allah Almighty, is called a disciple. One attains the essence of being a disciple when the desire even for paradise does not motivate him to perform worship.
He said that there is a metaphorical meaning of being a disciple, which applies to the followers of a spiritual mentor. A disciple joins the company of a spiritual guide so that latter may guide him towards the path of Allah Almighty. A Shaykh is a person who directs his disciple towards Allah Almighty. Shaykh-ul-Islam said that time to remove such misconceptions and misunderstandings has come. He stated that Huzoor Ghous-ul-Azam (R.A) wrote in chapter no 23 of his book ‘Ghunyatul Talibeen’ that he derived the word ‘Mureed’ from the Holy Quran. One is called disciple of a spiritual mentor because he steers him out of the world and puts him onto the path of seeking Allah’s pleasure.
Sultan-ul-Hind Hazrat Khawaja Ajmeri and Sayyidna Bahauddin Shah Naqshband also propagated the same teachings. He said that unless one vows to seek Allah’s love in this manner, one cannot become a disciple or ‘Mureed’ in true sense of the word. He regretted that this distinction had been eliminated, and we have forgotten that Shaykh is a means to an end, and not an end himself.
He said that unfortunately this entrenched and authentic creed of the Sunni school of thought, which has been holding sway for many centuries, is being eliminated under a conspiracy. “All this is being done in the name of innovation and polytheism. Many people have stopped to speak on true and correct creed these days, which includes the concept of inter-mediation, intercession, Mawlid-un-Nabi (SAW), Naat Khawani, Prophet’s Household, martyrdom of Imam Hussain (R.A), status of the Companions, Status of the Saints and other topics. The speakers choose to dilate upon other topics instead of these concepts in their speeches aimed at wooing the youth. This is how they are getting estranged from the real teachings of Islam,” he said.
Shaykh-ul-Islam said that it is wrong to consider the concept of holding of hands necessary at the time of taking allegiance is as per the teachings of spiritualism. Everything and every step in spiritualism is meant for Allah Almighty. Allegiance, he added, is a covenant between Allah and His subject. It is not mandatory to hold hands to mark allegiance. It is one of the customs, which has been followed but there is no definitive way of doings prescribed in the Islamic legal system.
Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that there was a culture of pledging allegiance at the hand of someone in the days of holy Companions, which is proven by Allegiance of Rizwan mentioned in the Holy Quran. The Holy Prophet (SAW) and the Companions took allegiance from people in different seven/eight forms. Not every allegiance of them was meant to become a disciple. Rather it was a covenant and if one holds the hands of other for this, there is no problem with this method as well. But if one does not do that and does not hold the hands, it would not be wrong either. A person who does not do so can also become a disciple and a Shaykh. No uniform mandatory method has been prescribed in this regard.
He said that the books authored by Imam Abul Qasim al-Qushayri and his Shaykh Imam Abu Abdur Rahman Sulumi, the revered teachers of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh, do not mention the method of giving hand in hand in order to pledge allegiance. Hazrat Shafique bin Ibrahim Balkhi from whom all spiritual chains issued forth joined the company of Hazrat Ibrahim bin Adham but never held his hand. He took him as his spiritual guide just by attending his company.
Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that a Shaykh is not allowed to walk up to people in search of disciples. Rather a Shaykh is a person towards whom people flock for guidance. It is his discretion to choose anyone of them as his disciple and refuse others. He who does not teach piety and morality is not a Shaykh.
Shaykh-ul-Islam said that we have confined the scope of Tasawwuf by equating it with the performance of a few rituals. It is advisable to attend the company of a spiritual mentor who is both a scholar and a pious man and lives spiritually both inwardly and outwardly. It is the responsibility of a Shaykh to educate his disciples in every possible way. He regretted that so-called spiritual mentors do not know even the fundamentals of religion and are on the loose to search for disciples. Islam does not accept this kind of spiritualism. The speech of Shaykh-ul-Islam concluded at 7:25 a.m.
