Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri Speaks at Muslims of Europe Conference

(Identity, Citizenship, Challenges & Opportunities)
01 & 02 July 2006 Istanbul – Turkey
(Organized by: Foreign & Commonwealth Office (U.K)

The past few years have been very challenging for the Muslims in the western world. Unfortunately the true picture of Islam has not been shown to the world although many efforts have been made by Islamic Organizations as well as Muslim individuals in many parts of Europe.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth office organized a 2 day conference on the 1st & 2nd of July 2006 in Istanbul the capital of Turkey. The Muslims of Europe Conference was organized to discuss the Identity, Citizenship, and Challenges & Opportunities with regards to the Muslims in Europe. Prominent Muslim Scholars, intellectuals, academics and government officials participated from more than 20 countries of the world.

Professor Mehmet Aydin the Religious Minister of Turkey did the opening speech followed by main speakers of the opening session, Prof Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu the secretary general of the OIC, Shaykh Ali Jumma the Mufti of Egypt and Rais ul Ulama Dr Mustafa Ceric the Grand Mufti of Bosnia.

In the second session each of the three topics of the conference were discussed which further led to group discussions on each topics for the next session. Each of the group discussions were lead by prominent Muslim intellectuals and scholars from all over the world.

There were five main speakers of the conference who spoke on the topics. Respectable Shaykh Yousaf Al-Qaradawi from Qatar spoke in Arabic followed by respectable Shaykh Abdullah Bin Bayyah from Mauritania spoke on the first day after Lunch. Amr Khaled and Dr Anwar Ibrahim from Malaysia delivered their speeches in English after dinner on the first day of the conference.

Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Dr Tariq Ramadan, Shaykh Hakim Murad, Shaykh Nuh Keller, Dr Mohamed Mestiri, Dilwar Hussain along with many more prominent scholars were the main participants who contributed in the conference.

The final and last speech among the main speakers was delivered by Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri on the 2nd day of the conference before the final session. Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri spoke on the true concept of identity and citizenship that Islam has given to the Humanity.

Islam has introduced the disciplines of plural society and has laid the foundations for an ideal plural society keeping the rights of every individual living in the society no matter what faith the individual belongs from.

Shaykh ul Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir ul Qadri further said that TERORISM HAS NO RELIGION. It is a social act and it is linked to society due to several reasons. Terrorism is an act that is a reaction due to specific reasons. Terrorism can be from any society but it has no link to any religion in the world. Terrorism can be American, it can be Indian, it can be Christian, Jewish, Chinese or it can be based on any society or country but cannot be taken to be a part of any religion.

Shaykh ul Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir ul Qadri concluded his speech by emphasising that Europe has always been in favour of Muslims within Europe and in the foreign world. But Europe needs to promote the true picture of Islam by placing modern learned Islamic Scholars and intellectuals as the participants of this conference on the media. Unfortunately media has not been playing its role in promoting the true picture of Islam due to which many problems have arisen for the Muslims as well as the European societies.

Finally, Sami Yusuf sang the beautiful supplication on the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them) before the declaration of the conference was read out by Dr Mustafa Ceric, the Grand Mufti of Bosnia.

Calm voice in sea of extremism

by David Costello From: The Courier-Mail August 05, 2011 12:00AM

IT takes a supremely brave individual to look into the eyes of Muslim extremists and tell them they are un-Islamic and unbelievers.

That is exactly what Dr Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri has done and that is why he acclaimed across the world as an enlightened, moderate voice within Islam.

Dr Qadri was born in Pakistan and became a distinguished scholar, lawyer and politician in his home country.

These days he is based in Canada and he travels the world to speak and touch base with members of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, the organisation he founded.

It is described as a worldwide, broad-based moderate Islamic welfare, human rights and education organisation.

Last week he was in Brisbane to address an interfaith meeting at Eight Mile Plains.

Now to say this man and his message are inspirational is something of an understatement.

I think most of the 500 or so people who heard him speak last Friday realised they were in the presence of an exceptional man.

He is a slight, immaculately-groomed individual and at first he spoke softly so the audience was straining to hear his words as he explained that true Islam does not accept brutality, extremism, militancy, killing and massacre.

There were murmurs of approval as he described Australia as “the best society, the best community on this planet, practising multifaith, multiculturalism and diversity in its true sense and reality”.

His voice rose to a crescendo while urging the audience to reject “bin Ladenism” and to remember that a Muslim was, first and foremost, a person of mercy.

He was given a prolonged standing ovation and looking around the room it was obvious a lot of healing was going on.

Dr Qadri is one man who can reach across that most difficult of divides – the one that exists between the Muslims and modern Western society.

The Brisbane audience was predominantly Muslim but also included local Jewish leaders, Amnesty International Queensland president David Forde and John Mickel, Speaker of the Queensland Parliament.

Their attendance was a show of solidarity with a Muslim community which has done it tough over the past decade.

There is no doubt the vast majority of Muslims in this country were appalled by the attacks of September 11, 2001 and the Bali bombings of October 2002 which killed 89 Australians.

But that did not spare them from being jeered at and spat on in the street and viewed with hostility as an anti-Islamic backlash swept the Western world.

Reports that that radical Muslims in Sydney and Melbourne had planned terrorist attacks in this country added to the tension.

Last year, radical Melbourne Muslim cleric Abdul Nacer Benbrika and five of his followers were jailed on terrorism charges. At their trial, a jury was told they discussed terrorist acts on city landmarks in Melbourne.

There were also revelations that mosques in Sydney and Melbourne were selling notorious and fraudulent anti-Semitic tracts such as The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

It didn’t help when Sheik Taj Din al-Hilaly the imam of the Lakemba mosque in Sydney and an Australian Sunni Muslim leader made a series of controversial statements. In 2006 he compared women wearing skimpy clothing to “uncovered meat”. Before that he had called the Holocaust a “Zionist lie”.

Brisbane was somewhat removed from these controversies but it was not spared entirely.

The worst attack against Muslims came only days after 9/11 when a wooden mosque in Kuraby in Brisbane’s south was firebombed and burnt to the ground.

More recently, there were some protests about the expansion of the Australian International Islamic College which has campuses at Durack, Carrara and Buranda.

Some callers to talkback radio worried about the schools turning out suicide bombers.

Dr Qadri has built a lot of bridges with the non-Islamic world but his main message is aimed directly at Muslims for a very good reason.

He is on the side of the angels in a battle for the soul of Islam.

For this, he has widespread support in the West and his profile increased in March 2010, when he published a 600-page “fatwa” or edict, which declared that terrorism and suicide attacks were “un-Islamic”.

After this, he appeared on Sky News, BBC News and Al-Jazeera and was interviewed by Sir David Frost.

There is much admiration for the work of Minhaj-ul-Quran International which in 2010 ran an anti-terrorism camp for Muslim youth in the UK.

Moderates such as Dr Qadri do not fear the West, which, as he says, allows Muslims more human rights and freedoms than Arab nations.

His chief enemies are Islamic hardliners inspired and funded by the austere Wahhabist or Salafist traditions of Saudi Arabia.

The militants and terrorists have particular disdain for the Sufi Muslim tradition to which Dr Qadri belongs. Sufism is a “mystical” stand of Islam which venerates saints and includes rituals of singing and dancing. Taliban extremists in Pakistan consider Sufis to be decadent and heretical and have killed hundreds of people in bomb attacks at shrines in the past two years.

This, of course, is the heart of the problem.

All Muslims look to the Koran and the Sunnah – the teaching and practice of Prophet Muhammad.

Different people interpret these ancient texts in different ways. While Dr Qadri cites the Prophet’s tolerance of other religions, you won’t find find any churches or mosques in Saudi Arabia.

Such a divergence of views, or course in not confined to Islam – take a look at the ruckus in the Christian church over homosexuality.

And in centuries past, Christians used the Bible to justify all sorts of barbarism, from anti-Jewish pogroms to slavery.

The Christian world has evolved into a largely liberal-democrat entity. The Islamic world has a long way to go.

It is important that we give plenty of support to decent ordinary Muslims and leaders such as Dr Qadri.

A Charismatic Leader Transcending Borders Of Nations And Religions: Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

By Mr. M. R. Malik and Mr. Raj Srinivasan  | Sept. 10, 2011

Source: http://www.topnewsreports.com/1234/sept11/report006.html

Eminent world leaders have recognized his work towards peace and freedom

In the course of human history, someone is born every hundred years or so, whose intuition on God, religion, and faith transcends the religion he or she is born into, and attracts people of many faith based groups, or people belonging to other religions. Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, who lives in Canada and travels around the world to spread his message of peace and freedom for all humanity, is one of the revivalists of the present century. Most of his speech is directed towards the extremist elements in the Muslim world, though many of his admirers who attend the meetings are leaders in other religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism. He acknowledges that the Western countries provide more freedom to Muslims than the many avowed Muslim nations and the Arab nations. It is not enough to read an article on him and try to understand his mission, his message for humanity, and where he is heading. There are too many news on both the print media and the websites to list.

The new Fatwa on Terrorism from the renowned authority of the Islamic World, Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, deals a devastating blow to al-Qaeda and its affiliates by removing decisively any remnant of theological justifications for terrorism. What is a Fatwa? A Fatwa is an Islamic religious ruling, widely misunderstood as a violent call to arms. The main theme of the Fatwa is that any act of terrorism, such as suicide bombing, cannot be justified, and there are no conditions, no pre-texts, and no exemptions. Dr. Qadri’s book, comprising 500 pages, was the first comprehensive analysis of terrorism, based on research of the Holy Quran, Hadith and Prophetic traditions (Indian Newslink, NZ, 13/08/2011) Not any Muslim cleric can issue a Fatwa. Only religious leaders of such prominence, who have learned the Holy Quran and have done extensive research can issue one. He has given interviews on Sky News, BBC News, and Al-Jazeera, and was interviewed by Sir David Frost. There is much admiration for the work of Minhaj-ul-Quran International which in 2010 ran an anti-terrorism camp for Muslim youth in the UK.

In his religious ruling, delivered in London, Dr. Qadri says that Islam forbids the massacre of innocent citizens and suicide bombings.

Although many scholars have made similar rulings in the past, Dr. Qadri argued that his massive document goes much further by omitting “ifs and buts” added by other thinkers.

Dr. Qadri developed this document last year as a response to the increase in bombings across Pakistan by militants, whom he called the “heroes of hellfire”. Shaykh-ul-Islam has been consistent in his endeavors to spread the true image of Islam. Here are some keynotes from his powerful speech at the Global Peace & Unity Event on October 24, 2010: “Islam stands for peace, love, compassion, mercy, and human dignity, and there is no room for terrorism in Islam. Islam does not stand for any kind of violence, militancy, terrorism, and brutality.”

Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri clarified that “the literal meaning of jihad is exertion, struggling, striving, and putting extreme efforts according to extreme abilities, to counter evil, to achieve good for the sake of Allah.” He added that “The defensive struggle against your enemy, defensive struggle against your lower-self, hatred, arrogance, corruption is one dimension of Jihad. And this is for the safety of the mankind, not for killing of mankind.”

Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri was given the title of “Shaykh-ul-Islam” by several major Islamic Institutions & Islamic authorities of this time, because of his great contributions to Islam and the Muslim world.

Moderates such as Dr. Qadri do not fear the West, which, as Dr. Qadri says, allows Muslims more human rights and freedoms than Arab nations. More on this and his speech in Brisbane, Australia are published by David Costello at his website at couriermail.

Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri founded an organization in 1981 called Minhaj-ul-Quran International , which runs schools and colleges all over the country. In less than 30 years, Minhaj-ul-Qur’an has expanded and spread over more than 90 countries around the world; in terms of its comprehensive and all-encompassing sphere of activities, educational, social, cultural and spiritual, Minhaj-ul-Qur’an is probably one of the largest non-governmental organizations in the world.

Shaykh-ul-Islam is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Governors of Minhaj University Lahore, which is chartered by the Government and is imparting higher education to thousands of students in the faculties of basic, modern, social, management, and religious sciences. He is the founding leader of different forums of Minhaj-ul-Qur’an including Minhaj-ul-Qur’an Ullama Council, Minhaj Welfare Foundation, Minhaj-ul-Qur’an Women League, Minhaj Youth League, Mustafavi Students Movements, and Muslim Christian Dialogue Forum.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has formally recognized and granted a ‘Special Consultative Status’ to Minhaj-ul-Quran International. The UN ECOSOC consultative status allows NGOs to attend UN conferences and meetings, submit written statements and reports, make oral interventions, and host panels in UN buildings.

Dr. Qadri has authored over 1000 literary works in 25 years, 450 of which have been published. Additionally, he has delivered over 6000 recorded lectures (in English, Arabic, and Urdu) encompassing countless fields. His revivalist, reformative and reconstructive efforts hold the distinct position for the propagation of faith.

Many of his books have also been translated into many other languages of the world, including Arabic, French, Norwegian, and English. His revivalist, reformative and reconstructive efforts hold the distinct position for the propagation of faith.

His views on women are liberal and advocate equality of gender. Dr. Qadri explains that women in Islam received the voting rights 1500 years ago, while in the western countries, women’s suffrage is a relatively new concept which happened in the 20th Century.

Dr. Qadri’s views on human rights are what the western countries are trying to propagate all over the world. He is against the violation of human rights by any group, and he states that mercy and love ought to be the foremost principles before any religious thoughts in the minds of human beings.

You can learn more about Dr. Qadri’s work on his website.

Eminent world leaders have recognized his work towards peace and freedom. A renowned American intellectual, Dr. Sardar Ganga Singh Dhillon, is a leader of Sikh community in Washington DC. He is a PhD in Political Science. On June 29, 2008, he expressed the following views in a meeting with a delegation of MQI at the residence of Ms. Aleena Aziz Tiwan. He said, “I am acquainted with Dr. Tahir-ul- Qadri for a long time and of the personalities who have established their identity on the basis of scholarship, Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri is one of them.

Whenever venerable Doctor came to the US, I had the honor of hosting him in addition to others. I have a special association with him. He is a great personality of history. He has knowledge of all religions and respects them. His services for peace, harmony and interfaith dialogue hare playing their effective role internationally. I benefit from the speeches and books of Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri. His viewpoint on human rights and other global issues is very argumentative and above religious biases and divides. He is a great Islamic scholar but also values but followers of other faiths also respect him a lot. Whenever I visit Pakistan, I hold a meeting with Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri. I think such personalities are gift of God to mankind.

Reality of Bay’ah in Sufism

Shaykh-ul-Islam said that it is wrong to consider the concept of holding of hands necessary at the time of taking allegiance is as per the teachings of spiritualism. Everything and every step in spiritualism is meant for Allah Almighty. Allegiance, he added, is a covenant between Allah and His subject. It is not mandatory to hold hands to mark allegiance. It is one of the customs, which has been followed but there is no definitive way of doings prescribed in the Islamic legal system.

Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that there was a culture of pledging allegiance at the hand of someone in the days of holy Companions, which is proven by Allegiance of Rizwan mentioned in the Holy Quran. The Holy Prophet (SAW) and the Companions took allegiance from people in different seven/eight forms. Not every allegiance of them was meant to become a disciple. Rather it was a covenant and if one holds the hands of other for this, there is no problem with this method as well. But if one does not do that and does not hold the hands, it would not be wrong either. A person who does not do so can also become a disciple and a Shaykh. No uniform mandatory method has been prescribed in this regard.

Imam Abu Hanifa:Imam of Imams in Hadith(Historic Research Work of Dr.Tahir-ul-Qadri)

Imam Abu Hanifa: Imam al-A’imma fi’l-Hadith

In the eyes of people of knowledge, grand jurists like Imam-e-Azam Abu Hanifa are counted among the attributes of the Holy Prophet (saw). As the Holy Quran is the living miracle and attribute of the Holy Prophet (saw), the collection of Prophetic traditions to preserve the Sunna of the Prophet (saw) is also one of his attributes. In the similar manner, the existence of respected jurists in general and Imam-e-Azam in particular is also the living miracle of the finality of Prophethood. All scholars are of the consensus opinion that Imam Azam Abu Hanifa undertook the task of compilation of jurisprudence for the first time. A grand jurist like Imam Shafi said: “Whosoever would seek knowledge of religion till Day of Judgment, he would be indebted to the blessings of knowledge of Abu Hanifa.”

It is said the greater the personality the greater the level of resistance. Such people are exposed to great trial and tribulation. Imam Abu Hanifa had also to pass through difficulties and intense opposition. Like great statesmen, Imam Abu Hanifa faced two challenges and difficulties at the same time. One level of difficulty was the traditional opposition of the kingdom because it was in the times of Imam Abu Hanifa that kingdom of Banu Ummayide came to an end and that of Banu Abbas was inaugurated. He was put behind bars and faced the rigours of imprisonment on regular basis on the orders of Abu Jafar Mansoor of Banu Abbas and last king of Banu Ummayad dynasty Marvan Bin Muhammad. He finally embraced martyrdom when he was compelled to drink poison by the kingdom, the worst sign of tyranny.

Neither did he commit any moral crime nor did he cause anyone any injury or damage any other property. His only crime was that he refused to become the part of tyrannical regime through his rejection of high government offices of Grand Mufti and Minister for Finance. This was the physical torture that was perpetrated on him and this came to an end with his demise. There was another kind of oppression, bias and thanklessness which his contemporary religious scholars continued against him. Afterwards religious classes of biased mindsets kept on having the same attitude against the revered Imam. After the passage of centuries, people with similar belief system and warped religious mindset are hell bent on defiling the character of the Imam even today. The biggest propaganda being undertaken by such nefarious elements pertains to his lack of and estrangement from the knowledge of Hadith. How ironic and unfortunate it is that about 80% people of the Muslim world are the followers of the jurisprudence designed by the great Imam, yet he is said to be unaware of knowledge of Hadith. However, it is swing of fate that despite continuous biased efforts and inimical attitude, Imam Abu Hanifa is still the ‘Imam-e-Azam or Grand Imam’. By grace of Allah Almighty he would continue to don this honour as long as this world lives.

Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, the founding leader of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, a representative organization of correct message of Islam and religious personages especially jurists and experts of knowledge of Hadith, also focused his attention on this issue in addition to working on other intellectual fronts. He collected the contributions and distinctions of the great Imam on knowledge of Hadith. He organized a prestigious two conferences one in United Kingdom and other in Pakistan before giving his research the form of the book. As usual, keynote speeches of Shaykh-ul-Islam delivered at these conferences were rendered into book form. Religious scholars of every age acknowledged the praise-worthy services of Imam Abu Hanifa and authored books on his knowledge of Hadith. It is interesting to note that more than Hanfi people, it is the Malkis, Shafis and Hambilis who have written more on the Imam’s contributions. These  prominent scholars included Imam Abu Abdullah Ahmad Bin Ali Seemri, Qazi Abu Umer Yousuf Bin Abdul Ber Maliki, Imam Muhammad Bin Muhammad Ghazali Shafi, Imam Fakhar-ud-Din Razi Shafi, Imam Abu Zakeria Yahya Bin Sharif Novi Shafi, Hafiz Jamal-ud-Din Yousuf Bin Abdur Rehman  Mazi Shafi, Imam Shams-ud-Din Muhammad Bin Ahmad Zehbi Shafi, Mujuddin Ferozabadi Shafi, Hafiz Ibne Hajir Asqalani Shafi, Allama Yousuf Bin Abdul Hadi Humbali, Imam Jalal-ud-Din Suyyuti Shafi, Hafiz Muhammad Bin Yousuf Salehi Damashqi Shafi, Qazi Hussain Bin Muhammad Diyar Bakeri Malki, Imam Ahmad Bin Hijer Hateemi Makki Shafi, and Imam Abdul Wahab Sheerani Shafi.

Besides this, work was done on the Imam in both Arab and non-Arab world in last three centuries. But there was a dire need of such a comprehensive and voluminous book which could encompass the excellent contributions of the great Imam to the science of Hadith like his work on jurisprudence. Doing so was historic responsibility of the followers of the Imam. Nature conferred this rare honour on Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri. The subjects he held his scholarly discourse on with the help of allusions and references includes difference between knowledge of Hadith and jurisprudence of Hadith, research of the prophetic glad tidings in favour of the grand Imam and the pillars of science of Hadith derived by the Imam. It has been established in the book with the help of historical references that the grand Imam is an heir of knowledge of Hadith of holy companions, Imams of the Prophetic Household and respected Tabaeen and he is the mentor of mentors of many renowned scholars of Hadith including Imam Bokhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Trimzi, Imam Abu Dawood, Imam Nisai, and Imam Maja etc.

If the Prophetic traditions narrated by the students of the grand Imam are set aside, nothing is left in the six books of Hadith. 96 prophetic traditions have been listed at the end of the book in order to prove the prologue, which were narrated by the Imam. Diversity of subjects discussed, their beautiful ordering and the provision of material from authentic sources of knowledge are those characteristics of the book which give it an edge over other contemporary books on the subject.
