Official Reply: Celebration of Christmas by Minhaj-ul-Quran for promoting interfaith Dialogue

Abu al-Awwab Hashmi

Some people having vested interests dub ceremonies organized to celebrate Christmas under the banner of Directorate of Interfaith Relations of MQI and Muslim-Christian Dialogue Forum (MCDF) as opposed to the Holy Quran and Hadith and violation of the Islamic teachings. They criticize Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri for his patronage of such functions. Responding to such objections and malicious propaganda campaign has not been the practice of MQI. However, some associates and workers of MQI are of the view that since such mentally perverted people misguide others by posting material on internet, therefore, the issue needs to be presented in correct perspective. This explains why this write-up has been written.

It is important to keep in mind at the outset and there are no two opinions on it that Christmas is purely a Christian religious festival and it is not desirable that the Muslims celebrate it. The Christmas ceremonies held under the aegis of MQI and its centres abroad are purely meant for the Christian community and not for the Muslims. The members of the Christian community participate in these programs, while the leaders of MQI take part in such ceremonies as a mark of solidarity and good will. Neither is Christmas celebrated as Islamic festival nor is it meant for the Muslims. Therefore, this is totally baseless allegation that the purpose of holding Christmas programs is to popularize this festival among the Muslims or to be affiliated with the Christians.

This point is worthy of mention that it was MQI, which expressed solidarity with the Christian community some twelve years ago but now it has become a standard practice of the religious scholars of various sects in Pakistan. Every year the pictures of Christmas celebrations wherein the leaders of the diverse Muslim religious opinion also participate and cut cakes are published in the national newspapers. Therefore, it is justified to demand of those who object to MQI and its leader that they should also pass religious verdict on these people.

It is the result of reconciliatory approach employed by Minhaj-ul-Quran International that there is a decline in the hatred against the Muslim community at the global level and other nations have started coming closer to the Muslims. They organize feasts and programs to celebrate the Muslim festivals as has happened in the UK at the official level (its details would follow). Likewise, the programs on Mawalid al-Nabi (blessings and peace be upon him) have started to be held in the Churches of Pakistan.

It is the fruit of MQI’s reconciliatory efforts and policies aimed at promotion of peace that Mawlid al-Nabi (blessings and peace be upon him) Conference was held in the Baptist Church in February 2010 for the first time in the history of the sub-continent. So much so that the Christian community organized protest demonstrations as a mark of solidarity and support for the Muslims against the blasphemous images of the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him). A meeting held in Presbyterian Church in Noulakha is a case in point in which the Christian community joined hands with their Muslim counterparts in condemning the blasphemous images. On declaration of online competition of blasphemous caricatures on Facebook, the organizers had to face to stiff resistance from within the western world. Resultantly, they had to abandon their pernicious and unholy plan.

Pastor Terry Jones, a priest from Florida State, declared to celebrate 9/11 as the “Burn Quran Day”. But following the severe criticism from the Muslim and non-Muslim world, he withdrew his decision. These steps were made possible by following a policy of reconciliation and harmony.

Dear readers! The world has become a global village in the contemporary age. Muslims live in their large numbers in the Christian and non-Muslim worlds. They enjoy complete freedom to celebrate religious festivals and practice their religious values and injunctions in these countries. Large-sized mosques have been built up there where the faithful offer their prayers five-times-a-day including the Friday prayer. Muslims book huge halls and big parks and celebrate Eids collectively. The Muslim students are given holiday on the occasions of Eid etc. The governments of these countries and other organizations arrange meetings at the official level and the Muslims are invited to these programs.

On the occasions of religious festivals of the Muslims, the foreign leaders and heads of states felicitate and wish their Muslim counterparts every year. We read and hear their statements on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha and the advent of holy month of Ramadan in the papers and on TV channels. I was invited to one such program on Eid al-Fitr by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office this year where a large number of Muslims including religious scholars belonging to all sects and businessmen were also present. Five ministers of the British cabinet also attended the function. Few days after the Eid al-Adha, Eid get-together was arranged at the 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister for the first time in UK’s history. The proceedings of the program got underway with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by Na`t and recitation of sending the blessings on the Holy Prophet. The arrangement of post-Eid get-togethers for the Muslim expatriate community by the western governments and other political and social organizations has become a standard practice these days.

In order to secure the rights and ensure safety of the Muslims living in the non-Muslim communities, it is important to convey a message to the host countries that Islam is an inclusive religion, which discourages conservatism and stands for human integration and establishment of a cosmopolitan society. If the Muslims also choose to reciprocate the feelings of goodwill on the religions festivals of the non-Muslims, there is no harm in doing so.

Minorities enjoy equal rights in Islamic state including the complete religious freedom. Their life and honour enjoys as much sanctity as does that of a Muslim. They have the same set of rights and duties as their Muslim counterparts. Imam Abu Yusuf narrates in Kitab al-Kharaj that when Khalid b. al-Walid (may Allah be well pleased with him) went to Iraq and Iran from the borders of Syria and Damascus on the orders of the first Caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiqu, the agreement he struck with the local residents of Aanat contained the following provisions:

  • Their Churches and convents would not be demolished.

  • They can play their music instruments without any constraint except during the prayers time.

  • They can take out their Cross on Christmas.

There are a number of incidents in the life of the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) wherein he allowed the non-Muslims to celebrate their festivals uninterruptedly with complete independence. He also allowed the Muslims to celebrate pre-Islamic festivals within the limits of the Islamic law. A few examples are given here below:

1.    There is an agreed upon narration of al-Bukhari and Muslim:

It is reported by Abu Abd Allah b. Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with him) that when the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) migrated to Medina, he found the Jews of Medina keeping fast on the 10th of Muharram. He enquired the reason of keeping fast. They told that on this very day, Allah Almighty had freed the Children of Israel from the oppression of Pharaoh by drowning him with his entire battalions and blessed Musa (peace be upon him) with victory. Musa (peace be upon him) kept fast to pay his gratitude to his Lord. So we also keep fast to mark the same. At this the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said: (Being a Prophet), I have more right on Musa (peace be upon him). Then he also kept fast himself on the same day and ordained (his Companions) to keep fast. (Narrated by al-Bukhari in al-Sahih, vol.2, p. 704 # 1900; and Muslim in al-Sahih, vol. 2, pp. 795–796 # 1130.)

According to this agreed upon hadith, on the basis of his prophetic relationship with Musa (peace be upon him), the Holy Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) kept fast himself and also ordered his Companions to do the same. Secondly, the Jews were allowed to celebrate this day as per their traditions. Thus the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) established a grand example of Islam being a religion of love, mercy and peaceful coexistence.

2.    According to another agreed upon tradition, it is clearly proven that once the Holy Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) was at his home on the occasion of Eid when the girls of Medinan Helpers were singing a song. The tradition is as follows:

Narrated by Aisha (may Allah be well pleased with her). She said that Abu Bakr (may Allah be well pleased with him) came and two girls of the Medinan Helpers were singing songs of bravery demonstrated on the occasion of battle of Bu`ath. She says that they were not (professional) singers. Abu Bakr (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: Satanic music instruments in the home of the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him)! And this is what happened on the Day of Eid. The Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said: O Abu Bakr! Every nation has Eid (to celebrate) and this is our Eid (so do not scold these girls). (Narrated by al-Bukhari in al-Sahih, vol. 1, p. 324 # 909; and Muslim in al-Sahih, vol. 2, p. 607 # 892.)

The traditions reported in Ibn Hibban’s al-Sahih prove that by the days of Eid were meant the days of Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca).

Establishing Islam as a moderate faith, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) did not forbid the Muslim girls to sing those songs which was related to the pre-Islamic days. He went to the extent of restraining Hazrat Abu Baker Saddiqu from scolding these girls. What can be a greater example of Islam being an accommodating religion that the Muslims remember the incidents of their period of ignorance on the occasion of Eid!

3.    Another agreed upon hadith proves that in 7th year of Hegira, a delegation from Abyssinia presented their local dance in the courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque on their festival. The Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) did not forbid them. He not only saw it himself but also made Aisha (may Allah be well pleased with her) see the scene by standing behind him. The words of reported tradition in Sahih Muslim are:

Aisha (may Allah be well pleased with her) narrates that she saw the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) standing at the door of her room and the Negroes were doing war exercises in the Mosque of the Prophet with their weapons. The Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) was hiding me in his blanket so that I could continue watching their exercises. The Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) kept on standing there for my sake until I was done with it and I myself returned from there. (Narrated by al-Bukhari in al-Sahih, vol. 1, p. 173 # 443; and Muslim in al-Sahih, vol. 2, p. 608–609 # 892.)

The last words of Tradition prove that the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) continued observing the sport for a long time and this is how he presented practical example of moderation and accommodation of Islamic faith.

Abu Hurayra (may Allah be well pleased with him) has narrated the same tradition in the following words:

بَيْنَا الْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُوْنَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صلى اﷲ عليه وآله وسلم بِحِرَابِهِمْ (وفي رواية للبخاري: فِي الْمَسْجِدِ) دَخَلَ عُمَرُ فَأَهْوَى إِلَى الْحَصَى، فَحَصَبَهُمْ بِهَا، فَقَالَ: دَعْهُمْ، يَا عُمَرُ.

Some Negroes were playing with their weapons in the presence of the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him). Hazrat Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) came and descended to pick up pebbles so that he could stop them. (Forbidding him), he said at this: O Umar! Do not forbid them! (Narrated by al-Bukhari in al-Sahih, vol. 3, p. 1063 # 2745; and Muslim in al-Sahih, vol. 2, p. 610 # 893.)

The hadith reported by Imam Nasai and Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal contain the following words:

فَقَالَ رَسُوْلُ اﷲِ صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: دَعْهُمْ، يَا عُمَرُ فَإِنَّمَا هُمْ بَنُوْ أَرْفِدَةَ.

The Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said: O Umar! Leave them. Verily, they (belong to) Banu Arfida (i.e., people of Abyssinia). (Narrated by al-Nasai in al-Sunan, vol. 3, p. 196 # 1596; and Ahmad b. Hanbal in al-Musnad, vol. 2, pp. 308, 540 # 8066, 10980.)

This narration is also reported by Aisha (may Allah be well pleased with her) in which she mentioned the incidents of girls of Medinan Helpers and sport of the Negroes together. The narration goes like this:

It is narrated by Aisha (may Allah be well pleased with her) that she said that the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) came to her and two girls (standing with her) were singing songs related to the battle of Bu`ath. He retired on the bed with a view to taking rest and turned his face towards another side (for sake of rest). Then Abu Bakr Siddique (may Allah be well pleased with him) came there and he scolded me pointing to Satanic music instruments in the presence of the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him). At this, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) got attentive to Abu Bakr Siddiqu (may Allah be well pleased with him) and said: (Abu Baker) leave them. (Aisha says that) when Abu Bakr drew his attention away, I pointed to the girls to leave. Likewise, it was a day of Eid of (Negroes) and Negroes were playing with their shields and weapons. I submitted to the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) (or he said it himself): (O Ayesha! do) you want to see? I submitted: Yes. He made me stand behind him and my cheeks were closer to those of the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) and he (blessings and peace be upon him) kept on saying: O people of Arfida, show more till when I got fed up, he said to me: Enough? I said: yes (O Prophet of Allah)! He said: Turn away. (Narrated by al-Bukhari in al-Sahih, vol. 1, p. 323 # 907; and Muslim in al-Sahih, vol. 2, p. 609 # 892.)

Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani, interpreter of Sahih al-Bukhari, interprets this narration in Fath al-Bari (vol. 2, p. 443): “Aisha (may Allah be well pleased with her) says that “it was a day of Eid.” So this shows that this Hadith has been derived in the same manner as the other one, which states that “people of Abyssinia were dancing in the Mosque on that day”. The mentioned tradition of al-Zuhri states that “people of Abyssinia would play in the Mosque” and in another tradition, he has added words (with their weapons of war). The tradition narrated by Muslim states the following words: (people of Abyssinia came to the Mosque to dance). Muhibb al-Din al-Tabari says that this context suggests that it was their habit on every Eid that they would play in the Mosque (with their weapons of war). It is stated in the tradition reported by Ibn Hibban that when the delegation from Abyssinia came over, they began dancing in the Mosque (with their weapons of war) and this suggests that they were granted permission of this on their arrival. There is no contradiction between both things because it is very probable that they may have come there on Eid and it may be their habit to play on Eid. So they might have done this as per their habit. Then they may have started doing so on every Eid. This stance is also supported by a tradition which Abu Dawud has quoted Anas (may Allah be well pleased with him) as saying that he said: When the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) came to Medina, the people of Abyssinia danced with their weapons of war as demonstration of happiness on his arrival and there is no doubt about this that to them, the day of the Holy Prophet’s (blessings and peace be upon him) arrival in Medina was far more prestigious than days of Eid (and all other happiness).”

Dear Readers! One objection raised by a particular section of people is that the Christians regard the Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) as their Lord and majority of them believe in the Trinity. Therefore, they utter such sentences in the Christmas ceremonies which are in conflict with the real concept of Oneness (Monotheism). What one can say by way of answer is that this view was also held by the Christians of the Holy Prophet’s (blessings and peace be upon him) times. The Holy Quran states about this belief of Christians:

لَقَدْ کَفَرَ الَّذِيْنَ قَالُوْۤا اِنَّ اﷲَ ثَالِثُ ثَلَـثَةٍ وَمَا مِنْ اِلَهٍ اِلَّآ اِلَـهٌ وَّاحِدٌ.

Certainly, they (also) become disbelievers who say: ‘Allah is the third of the three (Gods),’ whereas there is none worthy of worship except the One God. (al-Ma`ida, 5:73)

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran at verse number 171 of al-Nisa:

اِنَّمَا الْمَسِيْحُ عِيْسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَسُوْلُ اﷲِ وَکَلِمَتُه، اَلْقَهَآ اِلَى مَرْيَمَ وَرُوْحٌ مِّنْهُ فَاَمِنُوْا بِاﷲِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَلَا تَقُوْلُوْا ثَلَـثَةٌ.

The fact is simple that the Messiah, ‘Isa, son of Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary) is Allah’s Messenger and His Word which He conveyed to Maryam (Mary) and a Spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His Messengers and do not say: ‘There are three (Gods).’

Likewise, it was also the belief of the Jews that `Uzayr (peace be upon him) was the son of Allah. The Holy Quran says:

وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرُ نِ ابْنُ اﷲِ وَقَالَتِ النَّصَرَى الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ اﷲِ.

And the Jews said: ‘‘Uzayr (Ezra) is the son of Allah,’ and the Christians said: ‘The Messiah is the son of Allah.’ (al-Tawba, 9:30)

But despite all that, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) inked agreements with the Jews of Medina, gave them complete religious freedom as head of the Medina state and decided matters according to their religious law.

In the same manner, despite the belief of Trinity held by the Christians, the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) meted out humane treatment towards them. So much so when Islam attained victory, a Christian delegation of Najran stayed in the holy city of Medina for twenty days and performed worship as per their religious law in the Prophet’s Mosque. It must be kept in mind that the Christians subscribed to the creed of Trinity at that time. But we do not come across any hadith or narration whereby the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) might have entered into debate with the Christians about their belief or placed such condition that they would not perform worship based on utterance characterized by polytheism in his Mosque.

That is why the Holy Quran has restrained the Muslims from castigating the false gods of others lest they should also speak ill of true God of the Muslims. Allah Almighty says:

And, (O Muslims,) do not abuse these (false gods) these (polytheists) worship besides Allah, lest these people should (also, in retaliation,) revile against Allah’s Glory wrongfully due to ignorance. (al-An`am, 6:108)

It becomes manifestly clear from the above-mentioned incidents and authentic traditions that Islam stands for tolerance, moderation and accommodation. Therefore in the present times when Islam is being castigated as promoter of extremism and terrorism in the world, the participation of the religious and political leaders of religious parties and governments in the religious festivals of other religions should not be regarded as something harmful. This would help project real face of Islam, which has otherwise been blighted by the scars of terrorism and extremism. We need to promote the real teachings of Islam in the world such as tolerance, endurance, peaceful coexistence, justice, fair play and love. In a globalized world where distances are of no consequences, reaching out to people of other faiths in a spirit of harmony is what constitutes the best service rendered to promote the cause of Islam in the world. It calls for employment rational and logical understanding of Islamic teachings. However, those mired in ignorance cannot help themselves. About such people, the Holy Quran says:

صُمٌّ بُکْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُوْنَ.

They are deaf, dumb and blind. So they will not return (to the right path). (al-Baqara, 2:18)

The purpose of arranging Christmas ceremonies for the Christians under the banner of MQI is not to encourage common people to participate in their programs at mass-scale or to start holding such functions of Christmas. The symbolism involved in holding these programs is to promote the interfaith goodwill and tolerance. These endeavours are geared to build bridges by plugging the gulf between Muslims and non-Muslims so that Islam is known as a religion which promotes peace, harmony and integration.

Can Muslims celebrate Christmas ?

Can Muslims celebrate Christmas ?

Article Written by Safwan Ahmad

Q. Is it allowed for muslims to celebrate Christmas?

Ans. Yes, it’s permissible to commemorate Christmas and take part in its celebrations, provided one refrains from any activity in conflict with Islam.

Details: Technically speaking, as in many jurisprudential matters, taking part in Christmas celebrations, is an on-going debate among Islamic scholars. When there is a difference of opinion, one should follow whatever he deems correct. I’ll present both the views, you should follow whatever YOU feel is correct.

One school of thought argues it’s impermissible to celebrate Christmas as by observing the event, you are actually approving the Christian belief of Trinity, which is shirk. This group, interprets the hadith ‘Whoever imitates a people is one of them.’ (Sunan Abu Daud) in favour of their view.

They believe imitating kuffar in their religious celebrations is equivalent to kufr and by wishing “Merry Christmas” you’re supporting the claim of Jesus’ divinity.

They further maintain that Jesus, in reality,  was not born on the 25th  December and so there’s no point in celebrating the day. Some of this view’s followers even go at lengths to label  those Muslims who celebrate this event, as mushrik (Polytheists).

The second school of thought is moderate in its approach. Adherents of this group are increasing. The belief in Jesus being an important messenger and messiah is required in Islam. Allah has given Jesus the title of  Ruhullah (Spirit of God) in the Qur’an.

Jesus’ miraculous birth is one of the great events in the history of mankind and is the most-detailed birth discussed in the Qur’an. The Quran even quotes Jesus about his birthday  “Blessed was I (Jesus) on my birth day, and blessed I shall be on the day of my death” (Qur’an 19:33).

Christmas is the celebration of his birthday and celebration of birthdays of Prophet’s as well as common people is permissible in Islam. Commemorating Mawlid (birthday) is also a sunnah because the Prophet Muhamamd (pbuh) used to honour his own birthday.

The Prophet (s) was asked about his fasting on Mondays, and he answered: “That is the day that I was born”  (Sahih Muslim)

Once in Medina, the Prophet (s) sacrificed two animals in celebration and invited the Ansar over for dinner. Imam Suyuti commenting on this hadith writes this dinner was a celebration of his Mawlid (Birthday)  (Sunan Baihaqi, Al-hawi lil-fatawa)

It should be noted however, that i’m commenting on the permissibility of only this aspect of Christianity, Christmas has got nothing to do with Trinity, Crucifixion or the belief of Jesus being the God Incarnate/son. Just as the birthday of the last Prophet (s) is permissible so is the birthday of other Prophet’s.

The places where Prophets are born are amongst the Shaa’ir (venerated holy sites), particularly the birthplace of Jesus Christ, as it was one of the three places where the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) prayed on the night of ascension to heavens (Mi’raj).

“The Prophet (saw) while mentioning his journey of Miraaj said: Jibril  asked me to get off from the Bur’aq when we passed Bethlehem and requested me to pray, after which Gabriel asked: Ya rasulullah! Do you know where you have prayed ? You just prayed at Bethlehem where Jesus Christ was born.” [Sunnan an Nasai’I, Volume 1, Page No. 450, Hadith No. 450]

The argument of 25th December not being the birth date of Jesus seems irrelevant to me, because historically there has been dispute amongst scholars on the 12th of Rabi ul Awwal being Prophet Muhammad’s birth date. Shi’i muslims still celebrate Mawlid-un-Nabi on the 17th of Rabi ul Awwal, some even consider 8th to be the exact date, and celebrate it thereby. Most muslims symbolically commemorate on the 12th, as the majority of histrians agree with this date.

So we don’t comemmorate the 12th because it is the 12th or we don’t celebrate the birth ‘date’ of the Seal of Prophets (saw) only, rather we celebrate the FACT that HE WAS BORN in accordance to the Quranic injunction “(All this) is due to the bounty and mercy of Allah (bestowed upon you) through raising Muhammad (s) as the exalted Messenger. So the Muslims should rejoice over it. This is far better than (all that wealth) they accumulate.” (Yunus 10:58) .

That’s why many scholars, over the centuries, implied that the celebration of the Prophet’s Mawlid must not only be restricted to the 12th of Rabi` al-Awwal, but can and should be on every day of every month in every mosque, in order for people to feel the light of Islam and the light of Shari`a in their hearts.

This date has a symbolic significance in Islam, as 25th has in Christianity.

As far as the hadith ‘Whoever imitates a nation, is one of them’  is concerned, we believe, this only refers to the imitation of those acts which promote a particular religion’s beliefs (contradictory to islam).

For e.g. Easter or Diwali is included in this as they’ve a particular element of shirk in them. Candles are lighted in honour of the goddess Lakshmi, so joining Diwali celebrations  a form of glorifying their shirk. Easter is celebrated as the day Jesus the son rose from the dead and this resurrection eventually resulted in him being united with God the father. Festivals of this kind are undoubtedly impermissible from an islamic perspective.

But Christmas, in fact, is the most vigorous refutation of Jesus’s Divinity or him being God as the Supreme Creator cannot be created. “He does not give birth nor was he born”  (Quran 112)

God cannot be born which means that either Jesus is not God or Jesus wasn’t born. Christmas is the celebration of his birth which means Jesus was born, so the first statement stands true. :D   Christmas actually promotes tawhid (Oneness of God) and is the biggest irony of the Christian faith. Christmas is NOT shirk.

The following hadith clarifies this

Prophet Muhammad (saw) entered Medina in the first year of Hijra and noticed the Jews fasting on the 10th of Muharram. He asked one of his companions: “Why are the Jews fasting?”. His companion replied: “The Jews are celebrating remembering when Prophet Moses (pbuh) and the children of Israel were saved from the Pharaoh”.

The Prophet (s) said: “We have a greater right on Moses than they do. Therefore, my people will fast on Ashura in the same way they are fasting on Ashura”. (Sahih Bukhari)

In the hadith above, we can see, the Prophet (saw) imitated the jews, on the basis of a common element between the two faiths, in a way thats acceptable to Islam.

So anything, whose basic theme is not contradictory to the islamic Faith, and its related to any Prophet, we are allowed to commemorate it.

Based on this, I conclude with Shaykh ul-Islam’s words : ‘As the Prophet Muhammad (saw) said, if the Jews  are celebrating then we have a much higher right to celebrate it . Similarly I say: We have much higher right in celebrating the birthday of Jesus Christ than anybody else in this world.’ :)

‘Peace for Humanity’ Conference 2011 ‘Muhammad the Merciful’

‘Peace for Humanity’ Conference was held in historic Wembley Arena under the banner of Minhaj-ul-Quran International UK on September 24, 2011. Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri presided over the Conference, which was also attended by human rights and peace activists, religious scholars, opinion leaders and key leaders and followers of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism.

The representatives of all religions made special prayers for the establishment of peace in the world according to the teachings of their religions. Later on, the faith leaders gave their hands in hands of Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri to make a collective peace prayer. The peace candles were also lit on the occasion. Thousands of people, attending the historic Conference, stood up from their seats and the venue resounded with chants of ‘Allah is Great’.

Over 11 thousand people from North America, South Africa, Europe to Asia including Sahibzada Pir Sayyid Abdul Qadir Jamal-ud-Din Al-Gillani, Pir Sayyid Abdul Qadir Shah Gillani, Sahibzada Pir Amin-ul-Hasnat Shah, Dr Usama al-Abd, vice chancellor of renowned Al-Azhar University of Egypt, Dr Abdul Dayyan An-Nasir, Shaykh Muhammad al-Nanowy (USA), Dr Joel Hayward (UK), Noor Muhammad Jarral Mesut Kurtis (Macedonia), Ms Naeema Jaleel, Sahibzada Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Qadri, Ms Ghazala Hassan Qadri, Ms Khadija Atkinson, Ms Swaba, Sahibzada Pir Fayyaz-ul-Hassan, Dr Raheeq Ahmad Abbasi and Qari Sayyid Sadaqat Ali. Shaykh-ul-Islam delivered his keynote speech on the occasion.

The proceedings of the Conference got underway with the recitation from the Holy Quran followed by recital of ‘Qaseeda Burda Shairf’ and Naat in different languages of the world. At the outset of the program, the leading participants and scholars held one another’s hands to show their solidarity for promotion of peace in the world.

Ms Khadija Atkinson read out a document with regard to establishment of global peace, which was named as ‘London Declaration’ meant to promote peace and foster resistance and opposition to extremism. The participants were told that about one million people from across different nationalities, cultures and regions would sign this document till December 2011 to demonstrate their support for peace. The document has been launched online as well as through broachers. Ms Atkinson said that MQI has done justice to its task of representing the Muslims at the international level. She said that Islam is a religion of peace, which espouses equality, social and economic justice in the world without any discrimination of any kind. Its followers have been ordained to take care of even animals and plants. She said that the Conference has given a clear message to the world that terrorism and extremism have nothing to do with Islam and it is unfortunate that actions of a select group of misguided individuals were being associated with Islam, which was unfair. She said that it was wrong to blame Islam in this regard. She demanded that the anti-Islam policies framed on these erroneous perceptions should be discarded. She reminded the international human rights organizations and the world powers of their moral duty to rid the Islamic countries out of oppression. She said that doing so would guarantee the establishment and durability of international peace.

Address of Shaykh-ul-Islam

Addressing ‘Peace for Humanity Conference on the subject of “Islam and establishment of global peace’, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, the founding leader of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, said that the world needed peace, security and brotherhood more than before. He said that after 9/11, the difficulties of the Muslims around the globe have increased manifold. The picture of Islam spread in the world has nothing to do with Islam and 99% of Muslims are peace-loving. He said that terrorism and extremism had affected the Muslims more than the world. He said that thousands of people were killed in terrorist incidents, affecting millions of families. Extremism, he said, divided people and produced pessimism and despondency. He congratulated MQI UK on holding such a grand and purposeful Conference.

Addressing the leaders of different religions, who were present in the meeting, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri invited them to join their forces and collectively launch a peace drive in the world. He said that the entire world had become global village and humanity had a shared stake in the establishment and maintenance of peace. He said that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) gave the lesson of brotherhood, tolerance, moderation and peace. All Prophets and religions propagated the message of peace and harmony in the world. He said that it was important to prove ourselves a true inheritor of this legacy and dedicate ourselves to establishment of peace in the world. He hoped that ‘Peace for Humanity’ Conference would become the basis for further strengthening interfaith ties between the Muslims and the non-Muslims.

Addressing the Muslim youth, Shaykh-ul-Islam asked them to unite for the establishment of peace, respect, dignity and welfare of humanity. He asked them to dissociate with the Islam of Osama Bin Laden and become the true followers of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). He urged them to reject the ideology of Al-Qaeda and submit themselves to the real teachings of Islam. He said that MQI had established think tanks and planned lectures, conferences, and seminars for training and guidance of the Muslim youth. These think-tanks are playing their due role in promotion of peace.

Shaykh-ul-Islam said that after the 9/11, the blood of thousands of innocent people has been shed and the millions of families have been ruined. He said that the human life and values have lost their meaning. “It is about time, this process of de-humanization was stopped forthwith. The way the migration to the holy city of Medina paved the way for the beginning of a new age, likewise, the Wembley Conference would lay the foundation-stone for reviving the lost glory of Islam founded by the Holy Prophet (SAW). The Muslim youth should launch a sustained struggle for spreading the Islamic message of love and peace and expose and foil the conspiracies hatched enemies of Islam,” he added.

Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri said that the Western media supports 99% peaceful voice of majority Muslims, while only one percent is bent on projecting radicalized, bigoted minority. This one percent part of media should change its policy as well. “Gone are the days when extremist and terrorist mindset held sway. It is about time democracy replaced dictatorship, which is essentially part of Islam. The people must have inviolable right to enjoy fundamental rights and a free life,” he maintained.

Shaykh-ul-Islam made it clear that the time to heal wounds and bridge gulf had long come and the conduct of Peace for Humanity Conference condemned all forms and manifestations of terrorism and extremism in clear terms. He said that the people of the world must join their forces to eliminate fear, hatred and bigotry from the world and carve out a new direction for humanity where people have access to the necessities of life, enjoy socio-economic justice, live in an amicable and harmonious environment and have equality of opportunities to flourish in their lives. He urged upon followers of all regions to get united on the minimum agenda of humanity by keeping individual identities intact. “This is how peace can be established in the world,” he added.

Shaykh-ul-Islam said that he wanted to see the world transformed into a hub of happiness and peace from which issued forth the fountains of love, freedom, compassion, generosity and morality. He hoped that the international peace conference would lay the basis for establishment of brotherhood between the Muslims and non-Muslims.

The thousands of participants expressed their support and approval of Shaykh-ul-Islam’s mission by extending him a standing ovation, chants and slogans punctuated in between his speech.

The proceedings of the Conference were broadcast live throughout the world via Minhaj.tv and ARY QTV. The gatherings were also arranged in different parts of the country where people watched the proceedings of the Conference live from London.

Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri message on ‘World Day of Peace’ 2011

The world community is celebrating the International Day of Peace on September 21, 2011 today. The Day marks the humanity’s relentless struggle for the establishment of a peaceful, harmonious and just world order. The observance of this Day with traditional fervour across the continents, cultures and geographical boundaries reflects the shared stakes, opportunities and threats faced by the humanity without any discrimination of caste, creed, colour, race and religion. Hence the pursuit of peace becomes a shared goal warranting collective response and dedication. By holding seminars, workshops and other educative programs, the communities, on this day, highlight the importance of peace for socio-economic development and, by doing so, they also pay tribute to the individuals and organizations, which are working hard, day in and day out, to reduce differences and build bridges.

It was in 1981 that the UN General Assembly decided to celebrate the World Peace Day in a resolution sponsored by the United Kingdom devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace. The theme of 2011 namely “Peace and Democracy: Make your voice heard” also calls for concerted actions and employment of partnership approach to strengthen the ideals of peace and harmony in a world torn apart by wars, conflicts, wave of terrorism and extremism, bloodshed, civil strife, instability and chaos.

The right way to commemorate this auspicious day is to reflect on the challenges the world peace is faced with and come up with innovative and creative solutions to make this world a better place for our succeeding generations. The most immediate threats to global peace emanate from religious extremism, radicalism as well as from the menaces of poverty, denial of democratic and political rights and yawning gap between haves and have-nots. Developing a true understanding of nature and interplay of these threats constitutes the first necessary step towards eradicating them.

The goal of peace can be advanced through collaborative approach, which is inclusive and participatory in nature. The fight against extremism and radicalism is basically a battle between ideas, hearts and minds. The tendency to single out people on the basis of their religion, ethnicity, colour and race must end. The adoption of dialogue, accommodation and respect for dissent lays the necessary foundation to empower communities and people to join their forces for the shared wellbeing of humanity. It also means that investments need to be made in areas of fighting poverty, hunger, unemployment, building human resources, enhancing people’s access to education and justice, reducing gender disparities and population growth, ending violence, and putting in place sustainable structures to spearhead dialogue among followers of different cultures and religions. The use of hard power offers little prospect for enduring peace.

Minhaj-ul-Quran International has been engaged in a struggle for establishment of peace in the world since last three decades across the globe. It has initiated practical struggle to expose those extremist and bigoted elements who invoke the fair name of Islam to justify their heinous actions. The hundreds of educational centres, colleges, schools and university are busy imparting education of moderation, tolerance, love and accommodation. It has also put in place a sustainable mechanism to launch interfaith dialogue not only in Pakistan but also across the world with a view to building bridges and bringing people closer. The youths and women happen to be centre of special attention of MQI in this regard.

While celebrating the World Peace Day, we must make a vow to leave no stone unturned to make this world a place worth living. It calls for redoubling of our efforts. Failure in this context is not an option any more.

Seminar on containing extremism held under MRC Norway

Minhaj Reconciliation Council (Norway) arranged a prestigious seminar in Oslo on the subject of “How to contain extremism?” on September 3, 2011. Shaykh Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Qadri, chairman of WAAG Pakistan Branch, was the guest of honour on the occasion. This unique program in the Norwegian history was organized with the cooperation of Police and Justice Departments. The seminar was meant to unveil the authentic Fatwa on Terrorism and Suicide Bombings issued by Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, describe the basic stance of the Holy Qur’an and Sunna on this issue and promote awareness against terrorism and extremism among the general public.

After the recitation from the Holy Qur’an and Naat, Allama Noor Ahmad Noor and Ms Sunniva Gylver, a woman priest, expressed their views to show their sympathy and condolence with the affectees of terrorist incident on July 22, 2011. A silence of one minute was observed on this occasion. Mr Brynjar Lia, a renowned scholar of the defence department and counterterrorism expert, delivered his talk on the topic of containing terrorism. Dr Tore Bjorgo, senior research scholar of Police Academy, also expressed his views on the subject. He congratulated Minhaj-ul-Quran International Norway on this important initiative. Mr Owre Thorshaug, advisor to Norwegian Minister for Justice, threw light on the steps and measures taken by the government to stem terrorism. He underscored the need of benefiting from each other’s experiences and working together for the establishment of a just and peaceful society.

Chief guest of seminar, Shaykh Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Qadri, who is also the chairman of WAAG Pakistan Branch and President of Supreme Council of MQI, presented a comprehensive, scholarly and research-based paper on the subject under discussion. Describing the kinds of extremism, he particularly threw light on religious and political extremism in his speech. He said that religious extremism flourishes due to literature of religious bigots. The youths are brainwashed to fulfil the international political agenda by invoking the name of religion. The political extremism, he said, take root because of poverty, unemployment, injustice and denial of fundamental rights. He said that terrorists had nothing to do with Islam. They were the enemies of Islam and humanity. He said that the literal meaning of Islam is peace and security. The Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) while describing the definition of a Muslim, said: ‘The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands other Muslims remain safe.’ Shaykh Hassan said that following the migration of Medina, the society upon which the Holy Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) conferred rights for the first time was a multicultural society, which comprised of the Jews, Christians, Muslims and polytheists.

Shaykh Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Qadri further said that Islam is a peaceful religion and no Muslim can commit terrorism nor can any Muslim be a suicide bomber. He said that Islam talks of human dignity and honour. Those who wrongly interpret the Islamic terms and slogans such as “Dar al-Salam’, ‘Dar al-Kufr’, and ‘Islamic Caliphate’ are those extremists who are bent upon destroying the world peace for the sake of their nefarious designs. He said that Minhaj-ul-Quran International is engaged in a struggle to eliminate the scourges of terrorism and extremism through peaceful and intellectual means without any discrimination of a Muslim and non-Muslim.

He said that the world-renowned Al-Azhar University has been propagating the values of moderation and tolerance for many centuries. MQI (UK) has also been organizing anti-terror camps such as ‘Al-Hayidah’ for last many years in which the hundreds of participating youths are imparted the lesson of peace, love, brotherhood, integration, harmony and tolerance. He said that MQI is holding Peace for Humanity Conference on the subject of ‘Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him): The Mercy of the World’, which will also be attended by Shaykh-ul-Azhar Dr Ahmad Muhammad al-Tayyab, Dr Muhammad Abd al-Fudayl al-Qawsi and other renowned scholars. This Conference, he added, would be a milestone in synergizing the efforts of Minhaj-ul-Quran International and Al-Azhar University against terrorism and extremism.

Expressing his views after the keynote speech of Shaykh Hassan, Mr Audun Lysbakken, Norwegian Child and Family Minister, appreciated this moot of Minhaj Reconciliation Council. Waving the historic Fatwa of Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, he said that this Fatwa was a great scholarly treasure and served to allay many misunderstandings and confusions. Referring to scholarly talk of Shaykh Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Qadri, he said that he was sure that many misunderstandings about Islam and the Muslims would have been removed after the intellectual presentation of the Shaykh. He said that the facility with which the speaker threw light on the genesis of and possible solution to extremism was quite convincing and we must benefit from him. He also highlighted the need of working together without any discrimination of religion and culture in the larger interest of peace and harmony in the world.

Mr Barry White, the US Ambassador to Norway, attended the seminar along with wife and political secretary. He paid a tribute to the global services of Shaykh Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Qadri.

Historic lecture on Imam Abu Hanifa Imam-ul-Aimma fil Hadith:by Shaykh-ul-IslamTahir-ul-Qadri

An Imam Azam Conference on, Imam Azam Imam-ul-Aimma fil Hadith, was held at the head quarters of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, Lahore, in which Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri gave an historic lecture stemming from several months of research in which he proved that Imam Azam Abu Hanifa is the Imam of Hadith of all imams of Hadith including Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Tirmizi, Imam Abu Dawood, Imam Nasai etc.

Guest Scholars and Mashaikh

Hundreds of renowned scholars and Mashaikh from the length and breadth of the country came to the conference in order to witness the historic display by Shaykh-ul-Islam of his latest research which has never been done before in the whole history of Islam.

Some of the most renowned Scholars who attended are Peer Ameen-ul-Hasnaat son of Pir Justice Karam Shah al-Azhari, Allama Muhibbullah Nuri son of Faqih-e-Azam Allama Nur-ullah Naeemi, Shaykh Ahmad Zubaidi from Syria, Iranian Consulate General Aqai Raza Amini, Pir Sayyad Bilal Hussain Shah of Ajmaihr Shareef, Pir Khawaja Mueen ud-Deen Kuraijah, Sayyed Azmat Ali Shah Hamdani, Allama Niyaz Hussain Najafi, Professor Dr Jameel-ur-Rahman Chisti, Agha Murtaza Poya, Allama Ali Gazanfer Kararwi, Professor Abd-ur-Rahman Bukhari.

Talks by Guest Scholars and Mashaikh

Brief talks were delivered by some of the main guests as they appreciated the great historic effort of Shaykh-ul-Islam on cutting the roots of all baseless accusations levelled against Imam Azam Abu Hanifa for centuries. They stated that existence of such accusations and the inability of comprehensively rebutting them for centuries held a sense of shame among the lovers of Imam Azam across the globe, especially the Hanafis. They said that Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri, by conducting his deep and unprecedented research to prove that Imam Azam is the Imam-ul-Aimma fil Hadith, shows that Shaykh-ul-Islam is not only a great scholar, Interpreter of the Quran, a revolutionary leader and a thinker but has proved with out any shadow of a doubt that he is one of the biggest Muhadiths. Being the Mujadid of the present century it was only fitting for him to raise the heads of all Hanfis with pride as now they could prove to critics on how Imam Abu Hanifa truly is Imam Azam in Hadith as well as Fiqh. They concluded by hoping that Shaykh-ul-Islam would continue to revive Islam through his great mission of Minhaj-ul-Quran International (MQI) with their full backing and support behind him.

Historic Lecture

Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri delivered a lecture lasting just under four hours which was heavily condensed due to shortage of time. Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri announced that the whole of his research on this topic will be included in his book which will be published soon consisting of two volumes. He said he will only cover some of the main points of his research in the lecture.

Shaykh-ul-Islam totally demolished the slur that Imam Abu Hanifa only had knowledge of 17 hadiths or a limited number of hadith by an avalanche of arguments proving that Imam Abu Hanifa is actually the Shaykh in Hadith of all the main Imams of Hadith.

Main points of the lecture are given below which prove that Imam Azam Abu Hanifa is the Imam-ul-Aimma fil Hadith:

  • The hadith of Bukhari and Muslim, “a man from the children of Faaris will acquire knowledge even if it is in the stars” actually refers to Imam Abu Hanifa and not Sulaiman Farsi or any other Imam.
  • Imam Azam Abu Hanifa was a tabiee and had taken traditions from many sahabah. He was the only imam of Hadith who had taken all of his traditions from the “khair-ul-Qurun” from whom there is no possibility of fabricating traditions; this is why Imam Abu Hanifa received traditions which were not received by later Imams of Hadith Like Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim etc. as they had set strict conditions in accepting any tradition which severely limited the number of traditions which they accepted as Sahih.
  • The whole of the Sihah Sittah consists of 10,000 traditions but the musnads of Imam Abu Hanifah have a minimum of 10,000 traditions according to various narrations.
  • Imam Azam’s students were the Shaykhs of Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim and others as they had taken hadiths from them. This makes Imam Azam Abu Hanifa the grand shaykh of Imam Bukhari , Imam Muslim and others.
  • Sahih Bukhari is renowned for its salasiyaat: traditions which only have 3 links between Imam Bukhari and The Prophet SAW which number seventeen. Imam Azam Abu Hanifah has narrated traditions which only have one link between him and the Prophet SAW. This was a great revelation by Shaykh-ul-Islam as this was not pointed out by anyone in the past. Shaykh-ul-Islam devised the term Uhadiyaat for such traditions. Imam Abu Hanifah is the only Imam of hadith to have these traditions. Then Shaykh-ul-Islam revealed that there are also a great number of traditions narrated b Imam Azam Abu Hanifa which only have two links between him and the Prophet SAW which he termed as thanaiyaat. Again no other Imam of hadith has these traditions. The number of sulasiyaat narrated by Imam Abu Hanifa are so many that they have not been counted.
  • The salasiyaat of Bukhari, which are seen as the cream of Sahih Bukhari, 15 of the 17 were taken by Imam Bukhari from the students of Imam Azam Abu Hanifa.
  • The fact that Imam Bukhari did not take traditions directly from Imam Azam was not because he doubted the great status of Imam Azam in hadith. It was because Imam Bukhari has mentioned in his books that he only took traditions from people who considered iman to consist of declaration by the tongue, acceptance by the heart and practice upon Islam. Imam Abu Hanifah did not agree with that definition of Iman and only believed Iman to consist of the declaration of the tongue and acceptance by the heart.
  • Imam Muslim who was the student of Imam Bukhari did not take any tradition directly from Imam Bukhari in his Sahih Muslim; the same is the case with other Imams of Hadith who did not take traditions from their teachers. Imam Bukhari was a Shafai but did not take any traditions from Imam Shafai in his Sahih al-Bukhari. So not taking traditions from any Imam of hadith did not mean that the Imam who did not take them was in doubt of the hadithic ability of the Imam he was not taking the traditions from.
  • Shaykh-ul-Islam gave quotations from great Imams who regarded Imam Abu Hanifah as Imam Azam and the greatest authority in Hadith and knowledge.

Note: Full details, facts and figures were given in the lecture which can be viewed on this site, this was only an overview of the speech.

The historic lecture left all participants in shock, in the amount of new information which they had received from Shaykh-ul-Islam which they had never imagined to their wildest imaginations had even existed.

Preacher a voice for moderation

COVENTRY, England — Like any rousing Islamic preacher, Muhammed Tahir ul-Qadri’s voice rises to a shout and his index finger jabs as he hammers home a point.

But rather than angry calls for jihad or a vitriolic denunciation of the West and its aggressions against Islam, Mr. Qadri’s message, equally forcefully delivered, is about moderation, peace, inclusion and understanding.

Addressing a packed auditorium from a raised platform, his words beamed on to large screen behind him, more than 1,000 young followers hang on his every word, even as his lecture moves into its fourth uninterrupted hour.

“Islam is not a religion of seclusion, it is not a religion of detachment,” he thunders from the dais, occasionally pausing to wipe the sweat from his brow or adjust his spectacles.

“Any killer of a non-Muslim citizen, he will go to hell. Those who are committing terroristic acts from Pakistan and Afghanistan and claiming it is jihad – they do not know what jihad is. It is forbidden. There will not be janna [paradise] for them,” he hollers, to shouts of approval.

Mr. Qadri, 58, who was born in Pakistan but now lives in Canada, is a renowned scholar of Sufism, a long tradition within Islam that focuses on spirituality, emphasizing peace and moderation.

The author of more than 400 books on Islamic scholarship and law, he travels the world delivering sermons to Sufis, while his organization, called Minhaj ul-Quran, has spread to 80 countries, from Greece to Fiji, since its founding in 1981.

In Britain, he is the main draw at a three-day retreat for young Muslims called Al Hidayah (Guidance), which over the past five years has grown into the biggest spiritual camp of its kind, with more than 1,200 attendees from a dozen countries.

Mr. Qadri believes camps such as his, which attract teenagers – girls and boys wearing traditional dress who sit separately in the auditorium – as well as their parents and children as young as six, can play a part in combating extremism within Islam.

For Britain, that has been particularly important since 2003, when the country joined the invasion of Iraq, and 2005, when four young British Muslims carried out suicide bombings on the London transport network, killing 52 people.

“I feel it is my duty to save the younger generation from radicalization,” Mr. Qadri said quietly over lunch on Sunday, shortly after finishing the second of several lectures and question-and-answer sessions, which concluded yesterday.

“We need to prepare them mentally and academically, intellectually and spiritually, against extremist tendencies and radical and terrorist attitudes. We need to provide them with an awakening of the true picture of Islam.”

Around the world, and particularly in the United States, there has been a steady increase in adherence to Sufism in the past decade. Governments keen to tackle the spread of more radical branches of Islam in their countries have worked with Sufi scholars and tried to emphasize their teachings.

In Britain, home to about 1.7 million Muslims, mostly from Pakistan, the government at first worked to promote Sufism, supporting the creation in 2006 of the Sufi Muslim Council, a group that took a strong stand against Islamist extremism.

But since then, it has moved away from explicit support, saying that working via the Sufi community – whose exact number in Britain is not known – is just one element of a wider approach to countering Islamic radicalism.

“It’s part of a broader engagement. We don’t want to isolate any one group over another,” a government spokeswoman said.

Supporters of Mr. Qadri, though, are adamant about the benefits of his teachings, with students coming from as far as Denmark and Canada to hear him speak during the three-day retreat.

Women in particular like his emphasis on female equality within Islam, an element not always touched on by other Islamic scholars.

“What he says is mind-opening, it makes you feel good as a woman,” said Sofia Saeed, 27, a legal assistant who travelled from Manchester to attend the retreat with a friend.

“There’s no discrimination here. It makes you feel like a stronger believer, a stronger person,” she said, comfortably wearing both designer sunglasses and her full hijab head covering.

Mr. Qadri, a former minister in Pakistan and close associate of Benazir Bhutto, the assassinated former prime minister, does not believe his teachings can change radical minds overnight, but he is a believer that intellect can ultimately defeat extremism.

“If the terrorists are 10 people and the peaceful are 1,000, then they are more powerful than us with their arms, even if we are 5,000,” he said.

“But the point is that we have to make the 5,000 more powerful not with arms, but by the communication of the right message of Islam.”
